What is CCTV Fever Screening?

In it’s most basic form, CCTV fever-screening is designed to check the surface temperature of an individuals skin. The system does this firstly by identifying a human (using facial recognition), and then using a thermographic camera’s functionality to measure the skin-surface temperature.

What Fever Screening solutions are currently available?

There are a number of Fever-Screening solutions currently available on the market including, hand-held, entry-level, high-end and walk-through. I’ve put together some more information on these options below:

Handheld Fever Screening

This solution looks like a speedgun. It can be mounted on a tripod and pointed in the direction of oncoming pedestrian traffic. Once within range (between 1.50 and 3.00 metres), the device will register the targets temperature.

The handheld thermal camera is equipped with a 160×120 resolution thermal detector and is capable of discovering and tracking people with higher than average body temperature within a crowd. It can then alert the operator via PC based software, or smartphone app using a highlighted colour or audio alarm. This solution has an accuracy of +/- 0.5 degrees C.

High End Fever Screening

This solution utilises specially designed bullet or dome CCTV cameras combined with a Black Body Calibrator and PC based software. The Black Box calibrator is set at a constant temperature which allows for greater accuracy of temperature reading.

The High End camera is equipped with an reliable audible local alarm, 384 x 288 high resolution in the thermal channel and 4MP resolution in the optical channel. Used alongside the black body calibrator it can acheive accuracy of +/- 0.3 degrees C. These cameras can also work over a greater distance (distance between camera and face must be between 2.0 and 7.0 metres).

Entry Level Fever Screening

As with the High End solution, the Entry Level version pairs bullet or dome CCTV cameras with a Black Body Calibrator and PC based software. The entry level cameras have a shorter operational range (distance between face and camera must be between 0.8 and 2.5 metres).

The Entry Level Camera is equipped with a reliable temperature exemption alarm (alerting local operators of an high temperature), 160 x 120 resolution on the thermal channel.

Walk Through Metal Detector

This solution looks like the security scanners that you walk through at the airport. As well as boasting all of the features of the other Fever-Screening solutions, it also provides people counting, metal detection and an audible strobe light.

Where is it suitable to use CCTV Fever-Screening?

These solutions are not common place in the UK currently, but with the uncertainty caused by COVID-19 we have seen places of work, education, worship and leisure asking us to provide them with ideas for safeguarding their staff, visitors and customers. Designed for indoor environments, CCTV fever-screening can be utilised by a wide range of businesses and organisations.
