The Client

Surface Print is a fourth-generation, family-run wallpaper manufacturer producing luxury wallcoverings for customers around the world.

Based in Lancashire, an area with a proud history of wallpaper manufacturing, the business combines traditional craftsmanship with modern production methods to serve an international client base.

The Challenge

Surface Print approached Keytrak to modernise several areas of its security and operational infrastructure.

The project included:

Upgrading the existing access control system

Replacing the separate time and attendance system

Improving the site’s CCTV coverage and image quality

Addressing a physical security concern within a working production area

The client required a security partner that could understand its operational needs, develop a practical upgrade path and introduce modern technology without causing unnecessary disruption to the business.

Access Control and Time and Attendance

Surface Print’s existing access control system operated independently on the staff entrance door. Adding and managing users was time-consuming, and the system offered limited functionality.

The company’s time and attendance system was entirely separate and consisted of a single fingerprint terminal used by employees to clock in and out of their shifts.

Keytrak designed and installed a facial-recognition solution that combined access control and time and attendance within one integrated system.

The new platform simplified user management, reduced the need to operate separate systems and provided Surface Print with a more efficient way to manage staff access and attendance.

CCTV System Upgrade

Surface Print’s existing CCTV system was based on older analogue technology, with separate recorders serving the internal and external cameras.

Several cameras were no longer operational, image quality was limited and parts of the site were not adequately covered.

Keytrak replaced the existing equipment with a modern IP CCTV system. The project included:

Installing new network cabling

Replacing the analogue cameras with networked cameras

Combining the internal and external systems

Upgrading the recording equipment

Identifying and covering existing blind spots

Designing the system with future expansion in mind

The result was a single, modern CCTV platform offering improved image quality, simpler management and more effective protection across the premises and its perimeter.

“We had become used to living with a camera system that was adequate but did not give us what we really needed.

After speaking with the Keytrak team, they helped us develop a straightforward upgrade path that covered the blind spots and future-proofed the system.”

LD said:

“Upgrading older CCTV systems is one of my favourite types of project because the improvement in image quality can be so significant. It is rewarding for both our team and the client.

The existing system at Surface Print was old, but it had performed well for many years, which is a credit to the original installer.

The new IP cameras, supported by upgraded network infrastructure and the latest recording technology, have given the system a renewed purpose and allow it to protect the perimeter of the premises far more effectively.”

Additional Physical Security

Surface Print also had a security concern involving one of its industrial doors.

The door needed to remain open at certain times to provide ventilation within the production area. Although the area was staffed, the open entrance created a potential route for unauthorised access.

After reviewing the site, Keytrak recommended and installed a horizontal expanding security grille.

The grille allowed the industrial door to remain open for airflow while introducing an additional physical barrier and a clear deterrent against unauthorised entry.

JW said:

“I called Lewis and asked whether he had any ideas about how we could solve the issue. Within a few days, he had visited the site and proposed a solution.”

LD said:

“We had encountered this issue before. Open roller shutter and industrial doors can become a weak point in a building’s security during working hours.

We recommended a horizontal expanding grille because it provided an additional layer of security and a simple, visible deterrent without preventing the business from ventilating the area.”

The Result

Surface Print now benefits from a more modern, integrated and effective security solution across several areas of its operation.

The project delivered:

Combined access control and time and attendance

Faster and simpler user management

Improved CCTV image quality

Better internal and external camera coverage

A single, consolidated CCTV platform

Enhanced physical security within the production area

A clear upgrade path for future development

By taking the time to understand the client’s operational requirements, Keytrak was able to introduce modern technology while creating practical improvements in security, safety and workforce management.
